FISH AND CHIPS WITH A TWIST COMES TO ANN STREET!

13 September 2016

Ann Street has been boosted by the arrival of award-winning fish and chip restaurant and take-away, Fish City, which has recently opened its first outlet in the city centre.  Situated close to Victoria Square, it comprises 3800 sq. ft. spread over three floors and neighbouring occupiers include Caffe Nero, Yo Sushi, Urban Outfitters and Specsavers, according to property consultants, Osborne King, who negotiated the letting.

Gareth Howell, from Osborne King, who was instrumental in the letting, added, “It’s encouraging to see that local independent retailers are prepared to invest once more in the city centre, especially considering the large number of vacancies in Ann Street back in 2014/2015.

There have been several new arrivals to the street including California and Argento and we are aware of other retailers who will be taking up occupancy within the near future.  Proximity to Victoria Square creates a “pull” effect,  however, there are clear signs of increased consumer confidence and demand that are equally instrumental in attracting retailers back into the city centre.”

The new occupiers have created a bright, welcoming and contemporary restaurant that includes many visually arresting and quirky fixtures and fittings referencing Belfast’s maritime history.  In addition to offering an extensive range of seafood options including the traditional fish supper complete with mushy peas, the Fish City menu features more contemporary offerings such as wraps and tacos with various fillings, gluten-free dishes and lower-calorie options.  Healthy eating options for children also feature on the menu.

Business has been very good since opening in mid-July according to John Lavery who stated, “We’re appealing to a broad spectrum of customers, in particular, tourists, which is very encouraging.  In fact, we have had so many foreign customers over the past few weeks that we have just added a translation link to our menu which has already come in handy on a number of occasions!”

Explaining that Fish City’s ethos is built firmly on the sustainability and provenance of all its seafood, Mr Lavery went on to say, “We have a strong brand and while this will be our flagship restaurant, we hope to roll out more Fish City outlets across Ireland and the UK within the near future.”

Hoping to continue its award-winning streak, Fish City has been shortlisted for the UK 2017 National Fish and Chip Awards within the category of Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of The Year, the finals of which will be held in London next year.
